You fill a RAID with duplicate data. Then you delete the original camera files because space is tight. Six months later the client wants a 4K finish and you have to reconstruct from proxies that were never meant for final grade.
There is a better path, and it does not involve buying more hardware or hiring a media manager. It starts with asking one uncomfortable question at the beginning of every project: what does this content actually get used for? If the answer is web distribution, internal review, or social media posts, then why are you carrying around 6K raw files?
I tell teams to build their pipeline around the end format, not the camera spec. If you know your final deliverable is 1080p H.264 for YouTube, then create your proxy workflow directly from that target resolution. Keep a single master copy of each original camera file on cold storage for archival purposes only. Do not bring those originals into your active project until you absolutely need them for final color or VFX extraction.
A production coordinator at one agency I worked with cut her project ingestion time by 40 percent using this approach. Shift from ingesting everything
